>>> Movie Ratings Why

Movie Ratings Why! If you own an Apple computer and desire a display that shares your computer's design, you should only have two very similar options, one of which is Apple's 27" Thunderbolt display. At a cost of $999, it's not exactly a relatively inexpensive option. Does it justify its cost?

Apple's new 27-Inch Thunderbolt display is, generally, not only a new display. It is much the same as the older 27" LED Cinema Display, except it now includes Apple's Thunderbolt technology.

Still, that may not be a trival new feature. After all, the press announcements say Thunderbolt may be the coolest connection ever invented, so perhaps this system is worth a closer look.

Apple's new Thunderbolt display might not offer a lot regarding new display panel technology, but that doesn't mean it is behind the days or with a lack of quality. Besides simply being big, it gives you everything that most users might want. LED backlighting allows for more precise lighting control, lower energy use, and black level reproduction. Meanwhile, IPS display technology provides for vivid colors and wide viewing angles. And just to include some extra sprinkes of awesome, the resolution is 2560x1440.

Though Apple has dropped the "Cinema Display" brand from this awesome, it will still apply. This is a monitor which is geared towards the enjoyment of multimedia content like movies, photos and even video games. The use of high-gloss glass instead of a matte surface is proof that. It leads to more glare, but in addition drastically increases contrast. Images appear to have real "pop" and do not suffer from grainy details if viewed closely.

There are monitors that, in accordance with technical measurements, provide more accurate colors. Few, however, can match the subjective brilliance on this display.

Monitors aren't required to offer a lot of extra ports when they are cheap, but because price rises beyond a couple of hundred dollars, extra connections become expected. Apple has a reputation for poor connectivity in comparison to similarly priced competitors, and even though the Thunderbolt display does buck the popularity somewhat, maybe it's better.

The main connectivity feature, the Thunderbolt port, is within effect only Mini DisplayPort. Thunderbolt's more attractive feature is its bandwidth, but that does not offer any advantage here. It's also possible to daisy-chain multiple Thunderbolt devices using a single port, but in the lack of compatible devices currently available on the market, it is difficult to imagine this advantage being widely used. The only common application I can think about is daisy-chaining two displays with a single MacBook Pro, that's said to be possible (I have not tested it personally).

You'll also receive 3 USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, plus an Ethernet port. These ports can become extensions of the connected Mac, which can be handy in some instances. MacBook Airs, as an example, don't have Ethernet available even as an option, but sometimes use an Ethernet connection via this display.

What's lacking is, naturally, HDMI and DVI. The lack of USB 3.0 ports is another downer, though many competitors have yet to offer USB 3.0 also. The connections available on the Thunderbolt display is sensible if you are connecting it with a Mac, but when you aren't, it's going to seem rather limited.

The speakers with this display are a 2.1 system which offers reasonably adequate sound. However, like all single built-in monitor head unit ever made, the not enough proper sound staging limits enjoyment. Many external speaker options under $100 will give you better quality of sound, and you will probably want to purchase this type of solution until you almost never hear music, watch movies or play games. If you don't watch movies or play games though, you most likely wouldn't be buying this monitor.

To enable FaceTime, a microphone plus a webcam are included. The webcam quality is much better than most built-in monitor webcams and in many cases many inexpensive stand-alone webcams. Microphone quality is adequate for FaceTime and web calls, but isn't a option for recording a podcast.

Although the display's large stand is stable and trendy, it only tilts slightly, as there are no height, swivel or pivot adjustment. For some users, that is going to be a big deal, and almost all other monitors priced above $400 offer these traits. This is one instance where Apple's dedication to simple design seriously limits an item.

There's no question that this Thunderbolt display, like the previous 27" LED Cinema Display, supplies a top-notch viewing experience. Apple has not yet skimped on display technology, and even though the glossy glass panel may be annoying in bright rooms, it provides jaw-dropping visuals in more ideal lighting.

It's a shame, then, that this display is average by some other measure. Limited connectivity and a insufficient ergnomic adjustments are major dings against any monitor priced above $400, nevermind one that's just a buck shy of $1000. If you wait for a sale, you could potentially grab a 30-Inch Dell Ultrasharp for the same dough.

Given poor people value, you will never rate the product as anything better than average despite the excellent image quality. The main reason to buy this display is just not because it's the best value but because you own a Mac already, and you wish to stay inside Apple's ecosystem.
